– Sports fraternity mourns
The sports community in Guyana was plunged into sudden mourning yesterday
with the death of Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) Administrative Secretary, Shanomae Blackmore, following a brief illness. Blackmore reportedly passed peacefully at her home.
GOA Secretary General, Hector Edwards officially informed the media in an email when he said that “it is with regret (that) we wish to inform you of the death of Ms. Shanomae Blackmore, our Administrative Secretary, who passed away this morning at her home after a brief illness.”
President of the Olympic Association, K.A. Juman Yassin told Kaieteur Sport that the passing of Blackmore is “unbelievable” and “tragic”. “She was a valuable employee and a great person. She was deeply involved in our administration of sports,” he added.
According to Yassin, Blackmore was always helpful and willing to assist; he said that she will be missed by many. The GOA President expressed condolences to the family, and friends of the late Blackmore, who has worked with the Olympic Association since 2007. The Olympic Association recognised Blackmore at its Award Ceremony last year for ‘Outstanding Contributions to the Development of Sports’.
As Admin Secretary for the GOA, Blackmore interfaced with all Olympic Sports in Guyana that made her one of the most popular Administrators of Sport given her knowledge of any discipline that is under the International Olympic Committee (IOC) umbrella.
Blackmore was also Secretary of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), where she was an asset, being trained to use the Meet Manager Computing System, which enters athletes and result electronically. Blackmore’s Meet Manager knowledge made her a reliable source of information for the media.
In addition, Blackmore served as Secretary for the Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Committee for the last six years, where she played a major role in the development of the meet that’s held in Linden annually.
Contacted yesterday, Chairman of the Boyce & Jefford Track and Field Committee, Colin Boyce said that Blackmore was known to all in the sport community, and more specifically the athletics community, as an “astute” and “dependable” individual.
“Shanomae had a pleasant personality and she gave her life to the development of sport. She will be remembered by all as one who spent her life developing sport and track and field in Guyana,” Boyce said, expressing condolences on behalf of the Boyce & Jefford Committee to the family of the late Blackmore.
Despite her busy schedule and overwhelming diet of sport administration, Blackmore was part of civil society. Her facebook page was abuzz yesterday with several persons local and international pouring out condolences and remembering Blackmore.
Popular local artiste, Desiree Edghill said that Blackmore skilfully held together her youth group at Church amid challenges. According to Edghill, Blackmore was “strong” and “courageous” and “a leader”.
“You made my time as Youth Coordinator for the Youth Group so meaningful, and Mothers Day even more special. You held that youth group together, through all the challenges. How I wish I could have done something, something to make it easier for you. But I have to believe that God knows best or else it would be so difficult to get through this time and future times without you. I will miss you. We all will miss you! I loved you so Shanna. You will always be in my heart. Rest in Peace dear child,” Edghill seems to sum up the feeling of all who knew Blackmore.
Ironically, Shanomae’s last post on social media, Facebook, was one from Joel Osteen Ministries that stated “No matter what life throws your way, look that challenge in the eye and declare ‘You will not defeat me. I am a child of the Most High God.’”
Kaieteur Sport extends condolences to family, friends, Organisations, and all those mourning the loss of Ms. Shanomae Blackmore. Kaieteur Sport has benefitted immensely from the contributions of Blackmore. May her Soul Rest in Peace.
