– Rose Hall Jammers win by walkover after Smythfield Rockers failed to show
After a number of weeks of keenly contested action in the second annual Anamayah first division basketball competition there was a disappointing end to the tournament. In the end Rose Hall Town
Jammers were declared champions after their opponents Smythfield Rockers suffered cold feet and failed to show for the final scheduled for last Sunday at the Area ‘H’ hard court Rose Hall Town, Corentyne.
It was a disappointing end to the tournament which went well and the organisers will have to sit down and decide on what course of action to be taken against the defaulting Smythfield Rockers team who could not give any plausible excuse for their non-showing.
Smythfield Rockers were the runner up last year, while The Rose Hall Jammers had knocked out defending champion New Amsterdam Warriors from the tournament.
From the tournament a squad is expected to be selected to continue training for future tournaments. Coaching and training is expected to continue with help from the parent body in Georgetown.
Although the tournament ended on a disappointing note the sponsors were generally pleased with how it was conducted and the publicity it gained. They have shown all indications that it might be sponsored again.
The Rose Hall Town Jammers are now the new champions of Basketball in the Ancient County.
The tournament attracted seven teams – New Amsterdam Warriors and Smythfield Rockers of New Amsterdam, Hopetown Stealers and Ithica Hardliners from West Berbice, Fyrish Black Sharks and Rose Hall Jammers from Corentyne and Canje Knights of East Canje.
The tournament was coordinated by Vibert Garrett. (Samuel Whyte)
