Christopher Ram is a find for the coalition. He is now in the leadership of the Working People’s Alliance which automatically puts him in the leadership APNU. Mr. Ram will make a good speaker on the campaign trail.
A definitely good speaker on the campaign trail is Ms. Supriya Singh. Long absent from the ranks of the PNC, Ms. Singh made a dramatic re-entry into politics at the coalition rally in Linden last Sunday and was an enormous hit.
The coalition now boasts two additions in Ram and Singh which gives it a tremendous advantage, not to mention that Raphael Trotman has returned to the leadership of the AFC. Trotman would say he never left the leadership but I will stick with the word “return” and I will do so because I know better.
Why then would the coalition see Clinton Urling as a boost given the amazingly nonsensical statement he made the other day? Urling told the media that he is interested in joining the political campaign but will wait and see what the APNU-AFC unity team and the PPP have to offer to the nation in their respective manifestoes before he joins one or the other.
People tell me periodically that I am too blunt as a commentator but how should you describe such asininity as what came out of the mouth of Clinton Urling? He is waiting to see what the PPP has to offer in its election manifesto. Ignorantly, Mr. Urling has not read the previous manifestoes of the PPP.
Let’s leave out of the discussion the previous manifestoes of APNU and the AFC because they didn’t acquire power so we cannot accuse them of not implementing what they promised. The PPP in its last electoral programme, and ones before the 2011 elections, assured us of local government polls. In 2013 and 2014 the only organization in this entire country that opposed the holding of Local Government Elections was the PPP.
In previous manifestoes, the PPP promised the end of the radio monopoly. The radio monopoly is still there. The PPP government shared out thirteen radio licences and all went to Jagdeo’s friends and even the PPP itself got one. Linden is a communication nightmare for this country. The people who live there can only access the signals of NCN.
I don’t want to go further because it is a waste of time. Urling lived in Guyana the past twenty-three years and the breakdown of Guyana is there for him to see. He went to the University of Guyana where he was a student of mine. He must have seen the falling conditions then and they are worse now.
Urling runs a cook-shop in Tiger Bay named German’s. People are often robbed right outside his cook-shop in broad daylight which testifies to the breakdown of law and order. Terrance Parahoo left the cook-shop with his little daughter only to be seriously shot and robbed.
As recent as February 5, this year, Leila Gorberdhan and her little daughter were robbed of five million dollars after they finished dining and went to their car parked right outside the cook-shop. Because of these frequent robberies I do not take my wife to German’s anymore.
Against this backdrop, Clinton Urling is waiting to see what the two major parties have to offer before he joins one of them. But how impertinent is this guy. Who does he think he is? He can just walk into the APNU-AFC coalition and say to them, “If the PPP had a better programme, I would have joined them but yours is better so I am on board.” In other words, Clinton Urling has no ideological position on what has taken place in Guyana since Mr. Jagdeo became President and since the 2011 elections.
The question is whether the coalition needs him. I wrote above that now that Christopher Ram has officially entered politics and the PNC has regained Supriya Singh, what more does the coalition need than what they presently have? But let’s enter into a debate about Urling.
Can Urling make a difference? If yes, in what ways? Which constituencies will Nagamootoo sway? In which areas will David Granger be a hit? Where in Guyana lies the strength of Sharma Soloman and Vanessa Kissoon? Which section of the electorate can Dr. Ramayya persuade to vote for his candidacy?
We are talking practical politics here. This is the sociological realty of Guyana that all of us know about and hope to change one day. But given the present configurations and permutations, I don’t see what electoral capital Clinton Urling can bring to APNU-AFC.
