Police were forced to shoot a suspect early yesterday after he attacked them with two cutlasses when they tried to apprehend him after he had robbed a Smyth Street, Georgetown resident.
The incident occurred around 01:30 hrs on Croal Street, Georgetown.
The suspect has been identified as Gully Ross. He was shot to his leg and is nursing his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
In a statement, the police said that a 46-year-old vendor, Walter Drakes, was riding a bicycle along Croal Street when he was held up by a man armed with two cutlasses. The perpetrator took away a bag containing confectionery and escaped.
Quick response by the police led to the arrest of the suspect on Hadfield Street, Georgetown. During efforts to arrest him, the suspect attacked the police with the cutlasses and was shot to his legs.
The stolen articles were recovered.
