A 21- year- old man was given a three-year jail term by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, on Monday after he admitted to the court that he had a quantity of marijuana in his possession.
Estrick Simmons pleaded guilty to the charge which stated on March 13, at 111 Miles Mahdia, he had 16 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Police corporal Bharrat Mangru prosecuted the matter.
Simmons told the court that he only had 15 grams of the illegal substance in his possession.
The magistrate informed him that the offence attracts a minimum penalty of three years imprisonment or a maximum of five years.
When asked by the magistrate if he had anything to say before the sentencing he replied “no”.
Along with the jail sentencing, Simmons was also ordered to pay a fine of $30,000.
