Led by a fine all-round performance from skipper Travis Persaud, West Demerara
defeated Georgetown by 35 runs when the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter-Association U-19 50-over tournament commenced yesterday.
West Demerara rattled up 279-5 off their allotted 50 overs, batting first at Demerara Cricket Club. Ronaldo Renee and Akshaya Persaud added 57 for the second wicket before Renee was caught of Ronaldo Ali Mohamed for 26.
Persaud and Travis Persaud then frustrated their opponents with a third wicket stand of 89. Akshaya hit five fours and four sixes before he was removed by Tariq Dharanlall for 58. But Travis Persaud anchored his team innings as he shared in a fifth wickets partnership of 61 with Chatnarine Pooran (32) and 67 for the sixth wicket with Daniel Basdeo.
Persaud hammered nine fours and two sixes in his top score of 87 not out while Basdeo ended unbeaten on 31. Carlton Jacques took 2-46 while Mohamed and Dharanlall had one each.
Openers Joshua Ram and Sherfene Rutherford gave Georgetown a solid start with an opening stand of 52. Ram hit four fours before he was caught off Richie Looknauth for 18 while Rutherford was run out shortly after for 32 (3×4 2×6).
The home team then lost a few more wickets before Mohamed and Timothy Mc Almont kept their team in
the hunt with a fifth wicket partnership of 123. Mohamed struck eleven fours and three sixes before he went for 87.
Mc Almont and Shaquille Moseley then featured in a sixth wicket stand of 67, but when Mc Almont departed for 58 (4×4,1×6), the rest of the batting failed to keep up the pace. Moseley made 24 as Richie Looknauth claimed 3-19, Travis Persaud 3-25 and Shamar De Souza 2-26.
