An unfinished 146-run sixth wicket stand between Shiv Chanderpaul (69*) and
Vishaul Singh (41*) and a surprising declaration failed to prevent the penultimate round West Indies Cricket Board First-Class Cricket Franchise between the Guyana Jaguars and T&T’s Red Force from ending in a predicable draw at Providence yesterday. That result provided Guyana with its sixth Regional First-Class title with one game still to be played.
Chanderpaul stroked seven fours from 144 balls and 213 minutes in his 131st First-Class fifty, while Singh took 86 balls, 107 minutes and reached the boundary four times before the Jaguars declared at 266-5 leaving the visitors to get 218 in a session and 20 minutes.
When play was called off with 30 minutes left in the day’s play the Red Force were 99-3 in their second innings with Skipper Rayad Emrit (24) and Jason Mohamed (10) at the crease.
Jeremy Solozano (21) and Imran Khan (38) put on 49 before Narsingh Deonarine had Solozano LBW. Kjorn Ottley (1) was LBW to Veerasammy Permaul at 61-2 and man-of-the-Match Devendra Bishoo removed Khan four runs later but that would be the last success the Jaguars would get for the day.
However, the eight points earned from the draw was enough to take the Jaguars to an unassailable 131 points and give them their first Regional First-Class title since 1998 when
they shared it with the Leewards after both teams finished with 56 points.
It was also Guyana’s first Regional Four-Day title on their own since Roger Harper led them to Championship honours in the 1993 Red Stripe Cup.
The Jaguars are 23 points clear of second placed Barbados and 25 ahead of third placed Windwards Islands, Guyana’s final opponent from Friday in Dominica. The maximum points a team can get from any game is 20.
Scores: Jaguars (291 & 266-5 dec), Red Force (340 & 99-3)
Yesterday the Trinidadians wore black arm bands and a minute’s silence was observed before the start of play as mark of respect for former TTCB President Alloy Lequay who died on Sunday at age 90. Lequay was first elected Cricket Board President in 1977 after becoming T&T Table Tennis Association President in 1956. He was also a Politician.
When play began, Night Watchman Bishoo (4) fell to Brian Charles without addition to the overnight score of 120-3 but Deonarine and Chanderpaul, with sensible batting in sweltering heat, took the Jaguars to 183 before Deonarine, who stroked Khan for consecutive boundaries, was trapped LBW to the leg-spinner for 41. He batted for 132 minutes, faced 86 balls, hit five fours and moved to 505 runs in the tournament.
The Jaguars reached 198-5 by lunch with Chanderpaul on 39 and Singh on three with a lead of 149 and when play resumed after the break Chanderpaul spanked Khan to the mid-wicket boundary, while Singh straight drove Khan sweetly for four.
Singh played second fiddle to the more illustrious Chanderpaul, who cut Marlon Richards audaciously for four to post his fourth fifty for the season from 117 balls, 160 minutes. He celebrated with a commanding back cut for his sixth boundary off the next ball.
Chanderpaul was dropped on 59 by the Keeper off the hard working Black while Singh was also dropped a couple of times as he made a concerted effort to score quickly with several attacking shots including an injudicious reverse sweep.
The manner in which the partnership was being developed suggested that the Jaguars were harboring thoughts of a declaration but it was highly unlikely that T&T would be dismissed in just over a session and declaring would not have been the best decision at that point.
The partnership flourished as the pair batted in positive fashion before the declaration was made leaving the prolific Chanderpaul still without a three-figure score in 22 innings and seven months.
It also robbed Singh, who has batted consistently this season, the opportunity of getting his fifth half-century at this level and possible pressing on for his second ton this season.
Anthony Bramble will start the final game one dismissal short of equaling Courtney Browne’s record 42 dismissals in the 2004 season, while Permaul’s 59 wickets is one less than the record 60 taken by off-spinner Ryan Austin in 2009.
