The fourth day of protests for fallen political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing yesterday moved to Main Street, outside of State House, with demonstrators marching side by side as festivities were ongoing within the State House grounds.
Political activist Odo Best, who was on the front line of the demonstrations yesterday, expressed his heartbreak at Crum-Ewing’s murder. According to Best, Crum Ewing was a close friend of his and they had planned to go into Diamond together in order to campaign. However fate intervened.
“When I first got the news it was devastating. I didn’t believe at first until I showed up and saw him on the ground. I was shocked. For two nights I’ve lost sleep as a result. We had actually planned to go out on the streets, using the same bullhorn, as it draws closer to elections. Unfortunately, he started before us and he was taken out for it.”
“We need justice. This is not something that we are going to be taking lightly, because there will be more of us coming out here, more of us campaigning and we do not intend to see another person go down like that.”
Crum-Ewing, 40, was gunned down last Tuesday night at Third Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD) while reportedly urging residents, by way of bullhorn, to vote against the ruling party in the upcoming General and Regional Elections on May 11.
Crum-Ewing first started protesting and attracting media attention last year after an explosive phone conversation between a senior Kaieteur News reporter and Attorney General (AG), Anil Nandlall, surfaced.
Crum-Ewing had said that his protests were because Nandlall’s actions as the Chief Legal Officer were shameful.
The day following his assassination, members of civil society, including representatives from Blue CAPS and Society against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) demonstrated at the same spot Crum-Ewing occupied for weeks while calling for the resignation of the Attorney General.
On Thursday, there was an even greater swell in numbers as representatives from the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA), social and political activists, Kaieteur News staffers and public spirited citizens came out to condemn Crum Ewing’s death and demand that his killers, including the masterminds, be brought to justice.
Friday saw even more public spirited citizens, as well as Crum-Ewing’s family members come out, defiant that nothing could stop them in their quest for justice.
Courtney Crum-Ewing’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18. The body will be at his residence, 189 Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara for viewing from 10:00-11:00hrs and from 12:00 to 14:00hrs at the Parade Ground. Service will be held at Heavenly Light Full Gospel Church at Cooper Street, Albouystown at 2:30. The body will then be taken to Le Repentir cemetery for burial.
