Dozens of Plaisance residents watched as an early morning fire left two siblings homeless even as
they were making final preparations to bury their father.
Reports are that at approximately 07:00hours, yesterday morning Lonette Pickett and her brother Charles Pickett Jr, watched helplessly as their Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara home went up in flames. The siblings were unable to save anything from the home, escaping with only the clothes on their backs.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the scene, neither of the Picketts was present. This newspaper learnt that the siblings recently lost their father, and were preparing to go to the funeral parlour to prepare the body for funeral yesterday.
The family’s neighbour, who identified herself as Allison Glasgow, said that it is believed that the fire started in the back room of the Pickett’s home. She added that Lonette was standing on the “landing” at the top of the stairs.
“Lonette was on the landing and she feel this heat from inside the house, but she didn’t pay it any mind, because she thought that it was her brother in the kitchen,” the neighbour said.
This newspaper understands that it wasn’t until the woman peered into the house and saw the fire that she realised what was going on. Eyewitness reports state that the fire consumed the house quickly, making it was impossible for anyone to save anything.
As Glasgow recalled, “I hear dem boys seh fire, and by time I run to the back it was there.” She explained that upon running to the front of her neighbours’ house, all she could see was the blaze.
“By time I reach out hay… de fire jus deh. It went all over the steps. Dem boys try fuh go in the yard, and that fire run down the bannister and run up back.” Glasgow related.
She explained that Lonette went to stay with some family since she still was in shock, and had been in and out of consciousness since the fire started, while her brother ran away from the scene. “She went by some family fuh deal with it… All he (Charles Jr) is do is drink; he done gone up the road.”
Up to press time, it was still unclear what could have caused the fire. Investigations are ongoing.
