The community policing group (CPG) which was formed over three decade ago celebrated its 39th anniversary. Activities to compliment the anniversary was held in Region Two(Pomeroon/Supenaam) under the theme”.Community Policing supporting the fight against Domestic Violence, Suicide and Promoting Road Safety.” .
Some 500 CPG representatives from across the country took part in Saturday’s event which commenced with a march from Reliance Village, on the Essequibo Coast before converging at the Anna Regina Community Center ground.
In attendance were the Minister of Home Affairs, Clement James Rohee; Community Policing Chairman, Satyanand; G “Division Deputy Commander, Walter Stanton; and Region Two Chairman, Parmanand Persaud.
Rohee, who addressed the CPG representatives, noted that the community policing group(CPG) which was initiated by former senior police officer, Henry Fraser, in 1976, is a fantastic group that exists in Guyana.
He is of the opinion that the community policing citizens are committed persons who have pledged to give back to their communities, the society and the country as a whole. “This year’s activity is ongoing to surpass last year’s.”
The Minister is further convinced that the local CPG is the “best” Community Organization to have been established both nationally and regionally. He said the CPG’s manifesto is an example of ordinary people who have committed themselves to partnership with the Guyana Police Force to address and integrally fight crime.
Rohee added that the CPG is also critical of addressing social issues, such as domestic violence and suicide, while reminding another of its important role which is to also address road safety. Rohee said that through an annual budgetary allocation of funds for the Community Organization, millions of dollars were released towards the enhancement of the CPG.
“CPG is not competing with the Guyana Police force but is however complementary the force.”
Rohee assured members of CPG that the institution is here to stay and has a future in Guyana. He reminded that Guyana’s future depends on the security and prosperity of its citizens.
He challenged the CPG representatives to reconised the importance and to find a place for the Youth groups. “Be proud and recognise the contribution; stand strong despite challenges,” he urge them.
The Community Policing Group started with 16 members which have since increased to 500. They are also 270 policing groups country-wide.
Items of songs and poem were also performed by CPG representatives.
“G” Division deputy commander, Walter Stanton explained that the CPG is an oriented organization which is focused on building a relationship and working with the police to in the interest of attempting to address crime. (Yannason Duncan).
