Nestle Milo U-20 Schools Football Competition…
By Rawle Welch
The real business end of the Annual Nestle Milo Under-20 Schools Football Competition commences today with four highly anticipated matches at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Headlining the day’s round of games is the appearance of defending champion Lodge who will be going up against Bishop’s High in the third stanza and this promises to be a sizzling encounter.
They will be depending on the likes of Sylvester Richardson Kevin Boters, Jarel Grannum, Ryan Hackett and Leon Blake to bolster their chances of advancing.
Not much has been seen of Bishop’s High due to the school benefitting from walkovers, but judging from their performance last year it is known that they possess tenacity and quite a few players with exceptional skills.
In the opening game, Kingston engage St. Mary’s and this matchup while many pundits will be tempted to choose the former, this affair is another that promises to provide exhilarating action for the fans.
Vincent Thomas, who has been in prolific form, will lead the charge for Kingston and his support is expected to come from Allister Holder and Ryan Trotz, while Curtez Kellman and Andel Smith are the key players for St. Mary’s.
In the second fixture, Mae’s play Dolphin and this too is anticipated to serve up a feast of excitement for the fans.
Mae’s Darsham Persaud and Hakiem Hutson have both looked the most skilful and potent strike force in the tournament to date and the institution will once again be looking towards them to engineer a victory along with Emmanuel Trotman.
For Dolphin, Daquan Matthews and Leon Richardson have been among the school’s leading marksmen and therefore will have to bear the brunt of the work to secure a win, while Shamar Charles, Ryan Dowding and Darrel Omalis are the supporting cast.
The final game between South Ruimveldt and North Ruimveldt clearly emphasizes an electrifying start to the knockout phase.
Predicting the outcome of this one has proven to be an arduous task, especially since both teams have the ability to make it to the championship round.
North Ruimveldt will have in their line-up players the caliber of Shaquan Mars, Matthew Harrison, Tyrese Rowley, Deshawn Jones and Carl Griffith and they’ve already proven to be a lethal force against any defensive line.
South Ruimveldt on the other hand will be depending on the services of Shaquel Blair, Dequan Alleyne and Kevin McPherson to respond to any onslaught by the opposition.
Meanwhile, four more matches are planned for tomorrow at the same venue.
In the opening fixture, Queen’s College take on Morgan’s Learning Centre and that will be followed by the clash between Queenstown and East Ruimveldt.
St. Joseph’s then battle last year’s beaten finalist St. George’s and in the final encounter of the day, Chase Academy go up against Richard Ishmael.
Starting time on both days is 11:00 hrs.
The event’s winner will bag the championship trophy and $500,000 towards any school project, while the second, third and fourth placed finishers will pocket $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively, also towards the funding of a school undertaking.
Awards will be given to the event’s most valuable player, highest goal scorer and best goal keeper; while four full scholarships to attend Chase Academy free of cost is up for grabs.
