An excellent all-round performance by Kevin Sinclair guided Berbice Select XI to a 135-run victory over Essequibo when the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Inter-County U-17 50-over tournament continued yesterday.
The right-handed Sinclair stroked 67 as Berbice Select XI posted 229-8 in 50 overs after they elected to bat at Everest, before returning with the ball to capture five wickets to help bowl out Essequibo for 94 in 31.1 overs.
Openers Adrian Sukwah and Sasenarine Sukho survived some nervous moments from fast bowlers Jamal Wilson and Joshua Jones who both swung the ball at pace, adding 33 for the opening stand.
However Jones provided his team with the breakthrough by bowling Sukwah off the inside edge for 19. He then trapped Sukho (08) and Matthew Hardial (04) lbw to leave Berbice Select XI in a spot of bother at 58-3, but Sinclair and Steve Deonarine skillfully steady the innings with level-headed batting on a pitch which rendered much assistance to the spinners.
The duo gradually grew in confidence as they featured in a fourth-wicket stand of 113. While Sinclair picked up boundaries of Ramraj and Sachin Persaud, Deonarine was happy to play the supporting role, gathering runs with nudges and pushes.
Sinclair struck five fours and one six off 96 balls before he was lbw to Manoj Ramraj. Deonarine then
shared in a 40-run fifth wicket partnership with Filon Crandon (21) before he was lbw to off-spinner Beesham Moses just two shy of a half century. Deonarine hit one four and a six and faced 106 balls.
The Essequibians restricted the scoring somewhat in the closing stages of the innings with a few quick wickets. Jones finished with 3-32 while Moses, Ramraj and Mark Williams had one each.
Essequibo lost the early wicket of Williams (02) lbw to Raymond Vanicenic at 3-1, but Mahendra Persaud and Kevin Christian repaired the early damage with a second wicket stand of 42.
The pair settled in nicely after negotiating some testing moments from pacers Cylus Tyndall and Vanicenic, but after doing the hard work, Persaud who cracked three fours was taken off spinner Asif Ally for 19.
Brandon Stewart then removed Sachin Singh (06) while Ally and Sinclair accounted for Shaquille Sue and Mark Chung (02) in quick succession to further reduce their opponents. Christian who faced 69 balls and hit two fours was then taken at mid-wicket off Vanicenic for 21. Only Wilson (16) of the remaining batsmen managed double figures as man of the match, Sinclair bagged 5-5 off 5.1 overs while Vanicenic and Ally claimed two each.
