The pieces of Guyana’s basketball came together Wednesday night in a beautiful
collage at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to create what could be the epitome of success for the all-local senior male team currently embroiled in a three-game series against Bermuda.
The Guyanese men displayed a rare presence of psychological fortitude in the dying moments of an action-packed encounter, to basically upset the Bermudians 76-73 in game one of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation’s (GABF) International Series.
Trailing 71-73 with 22 seconds left in regulation time, the successful portrait of Guyana’s senior men’s basketball team came together when forward, Ryan Gullen landed a huge three-point shot, which sent the sizeable crowd into an immediate frenzy.
Gullen’s dagger came off the last of guard, Travis Burnett’s seven assists. It sent a quite crowd at the Sports Hall crazy. With everyone on their feet as Guyana rose into the lead, albeit a one-point advantage, Dave Causway completed the beautiful image.
Causway forced a midcourt steal and conversion that further pushed Guyana into what would be the final score-line. Burnett, who waited a long time for his senior national debut, ended with
17 points and seven steals while guard, Shelroy Thomas had 14 points.
Akeem Kanhai scored 11 points, completed four steals and ‘dished’ seven assists while Causway and Gullen finished with 10 points each for Guyana that was wrapped up in game two at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall up to Kaieteur Sport press time last night.
Bermudian forward, Sullivan Phillips scored 18 points while Deon Jones had 17 points. Captain, Chris Crumpler finished with 11 points as Jeron Haley supported with nine points. The Bermuda basketball team came into the encounter as favourites given their obvious size advantage and the higher placing in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation.
Guyana trailed Bermuda 51-57 at the end of the third quarter, setting up the humdinger finish at the indoor venue. The Guyanese drew level 62-62 with 4:53 remaining, before Causway started the 11-5 run with a three-point jumper that restored all hope.
The hosts’ first lead, 71-69, came through a jumper from Gullen, even though it was short-lived as a result of Phillips’ levelling the scores again with 1:09 left on the clock through a smooth one handed layup. Bermuda retook the lead with 40 seconds remaining.
It was the last for the visitors as the Guyanese managed to quell their momentum with a double-team defensive tactic on Phillips that created the necessary openings for Guyana. Phillips shot to send the game into overtime ricocheted off the rim.
Bermuda held Guyana to an 18-16 advantage in the opening quarter; down 10 points, the home team made a late run before halftime that put them down 36-37 at the break. Guyana’s only lead in the game came late in the fourth quarter as they held on for the win.
