On a day blessed with brilliant sunshine the second round Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) under-17 Inter-
County 50 overs cricket match between defending Champions Demerara and an Under-15 select side began an hour and 50 minutes late yesterday due to a photo shoot.
With the game scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs, the photo shoot of the Officers who attended the Officers Conference, the Police Commissioner, the Minister of Home Affairs and President Donald Ramotar, which necessitated the use of Chairs, Tables and flags of both Guyana and the Guyana Police Force delayed the start of play until 11:20hrs.
When the game eventually commenced it was reduced to a 40-over affair with Demerara electing to bat on a slow track and heavy outfield. Demerara led by half-centuries from Raymond Perez (73), National Under-19 all-rounder Ronaldo Mohamed (59*) and Joshua Persaud (54) reached 252-6 off their allotted overs.
Kevlon Anderson picked up 3-37 for the U-15s who were restricted to 110-9 when their overs expired. Skipper Ashmead Nedd slammed a shot-filled unbeaten 52 but was the only batsman to reach double figures as Devsham Persaud who captured 3-11 from eight impressive overs and Kevin Shewprashad (2-11) did the damage with the ball for the winners to Demerara their second win in two days.
Persaud and Perez provided a firm foundation for their team with a commanding 137-run opening stand as both batsmen batted fluently like they did in their first game against Essequibo when they added 37 at the same venue on Wednesday.
Persuad, who made 20 in his first game, clobbered Adolphius Bookie back over his head to post the 50 partnership before Man-of-the-Match Perez square drove left-arm spinner Nedd to boundary like a bullet when provided the right-hander with too much width and the batsmen’s confidence increase the longer they remained at the crease.
Anderson made the break-through when he removed Perez for 73 from 86 balls with nine fours before Persaud departed five runs later after facing 84 balls. He reached the boundary five times and cleared it once to leave the score on 143-2.
Mohamed, who has gotten taller and put on some muscle, then tore into the attack with a brutal unbeaten 59 from 42 balls with four fours and three sixes while Ramnarine Chatura with quick-fire nine-ball 17, reached the boundary twice and cleared it once to propel their over the 250 mark.
After Mohamed bowled Robin Williams for duck in spectacular fashion with just a run on the board, Persaud and Shewprashad insured that the handcuffs were kept on the batsmen as the U-15s team’s condition got progressively worse as only Nedd, the son of former Guyana off-spinner and Demerara U-17 Coach Gavin Nedd provided a one-man show for the fair size crowd hitting a six and nine fours in his entertaining 68-ball half-century.
Nedd, one of three players who played in last year’s Regional U-15 Competition in Jamaica, reached his fifty off the Penultimate ball of the one-sided contest with an edge past the Keeper for four.
The competition continues tomorrow with the final round and Demerara are well placed to retain their title when they come up against a Berbice Select side.
