In an effort to address the constant flooding that has been experienced in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) every time it rains excessively, the Ministry of Agriculture through the National Drainage Irrigation Authority(NDIA) is in the process of constructing a modern high capacity pump station, at Lima, Essequibo Coast.
The project, which is in its initial stage, is expected to be completed within the next seven months provided that the weather is favorable. Currently excavation and revetment works are being carried out at the site. The installation of piles would follow.
The pump which was sourced from India is expected to push some five cubic meter of water per second, while the facility would bring relief to residents and rice farmers in Region Two.
Region Two Chairman, Parmanand Persaud, who visited the construction site, explained that the pump when it is installed will serve residents and farmers within the areas of Anna Regina to Hampton Court.
Persaud said, too, that while drainage and irrigation within Region Two would be further enhanced, often times the sluices become easily silted, thus preventing the fluid flow and resulting in constant flooding.
The Chairman said that a mobile pump which was installed at Lima in January of this year will also aid in the process.
Region Two has additional pumps which are installed at Three Friends, Devonshire-Castle, Hampton Court and Anna Regina.
Only recently a number of residents’ yards and rice fields have been under water. The Region has since availed itself of pumps and fuel to rescue those persons affected.
