What started out as a “simple argument” over a cell phone number, ended with Shawn Richards being apprehended at the Providence Police Station, and his 39-year-old reputed wife, Aruna Sookram undergoing surgery on her left arm at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Reports are that sometime around 14:00 hours yesterday, while at their Herstelling East Bank Demerara (EBD) home, Sookram confronted Richards about a woman’s cell phone number which she had found in his phone.
This newspaper understands that Richards and Sookram have been living together for several months, and he is also the contractor that is building her home.
The woman’s mother, Hemwattie “Iva” Sookram told Kaieteur News, that “he (Richards) was cheating on her. She know because she see de other woman number in his phone, and she jus’ simply talk to he about it, and that is what started everything.”
The older Sookram said that during the altercation, Richards picked up a bottle of kerosene, and began to throw it all over the couple’s Herstelling home. “Then he hold she and start fire chop with the cutlass, and cut way she hand. Then he broad-side she with it, and now she whole left hand black, and these two fingers (pinky and ring finger) ain’t wukkin no more.”
The injured woman’s mother recalled that it was just last year that her grandson secured a loan for $8M that would go towards building her daughter’s home. She said that her daughter’s life was saved only because the men, who are currently working on the house, came to her aid and contacted the police in time.
“But if the carpenters didn’t deh, she wudda die… because by de time I went to make a report to the police at Providence station, the boys that Shawn have working on the house de already call dem, and they come real quick and they catch he. They lucky because he de already call a taxi to come pick he up so he could get away”
The clearly upset woman explained that this is not the first time that her daughter has suffered at the hands of her reputed husband. She recalled that just last month, he doused her with gasoline, and it was public spirited persons who were nearby that came to her rescue.
