…to prevent “pirating” of celebration
In the coming years, Guyanese businesses can expect to require permission from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to use the word “Mashramani” in any promotional material for the national celebration.
The announcement was made by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, at the Mashramani Competition Award Ceremony at the National Cultural Centre, yesterday. According to the Minister, citizens can expect the word “Mashramani” to be patented by the Culture Ministry in time for next year’s Republic Day celebration.
The Minister explained that the move to patent the Guyanese word would be to protect promoters and companies from “market hijacking” the national celebration. He explained that by patenting “Mashramani”, the Ministry will be allowed to monitor those businesses that contribute to the development of the event, rather than those who “piggy-back” off the festivities.
Minister Anthony stressed that while this year’s celebration was met with much support from the business community, it was found that others reaped the benefits of the festivities without contributing to celebrations on a whole.
“We can’t have this type of pirating of the event,” said Minister Anthony, “Businesses would need permission to use the word (Mashramani) from the Ministry.”
The Minister stressed the importance of early preparedness on the part of Guyanese

businesses in supporting future Mashramani celebrations. According to Minister Anthony, the Mashramani Planning Committee is looking to amplify next year’s festivities to commemorate Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
“Next year’s celebration is going to be bigger and better to mark our 50th Independence Anniversary. We want a whole year of celebrations and Mashramani would be the perfect time to jumpstart that celebration,” said the Minister.
Meanwhile, awards were presented to top competitors at this year’s Mashramani Costume Band and Float Parade includingDigicel, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. A significant number of accolades were also presented to the Guyana Police Force and fashion designer Olympia Small. The latter was awarded Designer of the Year for her work on the Digicel Mash Band.
Rounding up the Children’s Mashramani Costume Parade were the Happy Hearts Nursery School, Tucville Primary, Cummings Lodge Secondary and the Hinterland Scholarship Division.
Outside the Parade competition, individual winners included Calypso Monarch champion, Manoel ‘King Pearai’ Ferreira and Chutney Monarch victor Roger ‘Young Bill Rogers’ Hinds. While at the ceremony, Carib Soca Monarch king Jumo Primo still managed to garner notable applause for his winner number “Unruly”.
