A New Amsterdam prison inmate was found lying in a motionless position on his bed in his cell on Sunday.
The man Daveanand Albert, called ‘Brother’, 50, of Lot one Bhanjara Sawmill Dam, Lot One Grant 1803 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, had allegedly murdered his wife back in March 2010 and then fled the country to neighbouring Suriname.
He was subsequently arrested and charged for the crime when he was deported back to Guyana in 2014.
Daveanand Albert was discovered around 22:00 hrs on Sunday evening lying motionless in his cell in the New Amsterdam Prison.
Albert was admitted to prison on March 10, 2014 after he was charged with murdering his wife Esther Albert, called ‘Kamla’, 43.
Whilst in prison the man was diagnosed with a heart condition and was a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital. He was last treated on March 2, last, when he was diagnosed with having tuberculosis.
The woman’s body was found in the home she shared with him and the children. Albert who was wanted by the police in connection with the crime subsequently fled the country. He was nabbed in Suriname and deported. Investigators recognized him as the wanted man and he was subsequently charged with the capitol offence.
According to information back then, the couple was imbibing alcoholic beverages. After returning home an argument ensued. The husband allegedly dealt the woman some lashes with a pointer broom and gave her a few slaps. The body bore two wounds on the head, one on the left eye and another on the forehead.
One of the woman’s young sons had stated back then that his father was responsible for his mother’s demise. Only the two were at home and he had stated then, that when he returned home around 18:30 hours, his mother was lying on the ground. Her head and face were bloodied and her mouth was also swollen and bloodied. Her eyes were shut and she wasn’t talking. She was lying on the ground, groaning all the time. His father was cursing all the time.
He was called early the next day and sent by his father to his grandmother place to collect Limacol or mentholated spirit.
He then informed his grandmother what occurred.
Relatives had indicated that Esther Albert was seen playing Phagwah and imbibing a copious amount of alcohol the day before her body was discovered.
A Post Mortem examination conducted on the body had concluded that she died from manually strangulation.
