Smythfield Rockers steadied themselves before overcoming a determined Hopetown Stealers to secure victory and steal a spot in the final of the Anamaya Memorial inter club First Division Basketball competition for
teams in Berbice in their second semi final game which was played on Sunday at the Hopetown Basketball court, West Coast Berbice.
The more experienced Smythfield Rockers combination had to stave off a stiff challenge throughout most of the encounter before pulling away in the final segment to win 68-59.
At the end of the first quarter the Rockers had a slim one point lead at 14-13. The battle was more intense in the second quarter with both teams upping the ante. However neither team were able to pull away as they went into the half time segment with the score level at 29-29.
The intensity continued in the third stanza however the Rockers were able to establish a five point lead at the end of the third stanza which ended 44-39.
The Rockers were able to capitalise on their lead going into the final quarter which they maintained until the end as they held off the Hopetown Stealers who gave it their best shot as the Rockers came out winners 68-59.
Neil Wills with 18 points led the scoring for the Smythfield Rockers with support from Jamal Felix15 and Robert Esseboom with 11.
For Hopetown Stealers, Jerrol Allen led the way with a game high 25 points as he was supported by Sherlon Gillis with 14 and Travis Lucious with 09.
Smythfield Rockers will now play surprise finalist Rose Hall Town Jammers in the final which is slated for Next Sunday (15th March) at the Rose Hall Town Court, Area H, Corentyne, Berbice.
The top two teams as well as outstanding individual players will be presented with trophies and other incentives.
