Bramble breaks 45-year-old Keeping record
By Sean Devers
In a battle of attrition yesterday at Providence on the third day of the eighth round of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) First-Class Franchise Cricket match between Guyana Jaguars and Jamaica, Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, Wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble, Vishaul Singh and Skipper Leon Johnson all enjoyed an auspicious day at the office to set up a five-wicket win for the Jaguars inside three days.
Man-of-the-Match 25-year-old Permaul again befuddled the batsmen, bagging 5-33 for match figures of 10-110. This was his 14th five-wicket and fourth 10-wicket match haul at First-Class level. It was also his 3rd 10-wicket and 4th five-wicket haul in this tournament and took his wicket tally to 56.
Bishoo (4-22) had match figures of 8-84 and carried his wicket tally to 44, only behind Permaul, his Albion team mate. The 24-year-old Bramble, another Berbician, broke the 45-year-old Guyana wicketkeeping record when he had nine dismissals in the match as Jamaica were bowled out for 138 in their second innings, 18 minutes after Lunch.
This was despite an attractive 47 from Jermaine Blackwood and 28 from John Campbell, who added 77 for the second wicket before the spin pair began the demolition job.
Leaders Guyana, set 161 to win, reached 163-5 to register their seventh win in eight games and take their points tally to 123.
Johnson, troubled by a hamstring problem, batted for 160 minutes, 95 balls and hit five fours in 60 and together with Vishaul Singh, who made 57 from 157 minutes, 146 balls with six boundaries, added 89 for the fourth wicket to rescue their team from 42-3.
Chris Barnwell punched Jason Dawes for four and finished the game with a six in his unbeaten 21 while Bramble (0) was the other not out batsman when their fifth consecutive victory was achieved at 17:24hrs. Dawes had 3-24.
Scores: Jamaica (258 & 138), Jaguars (236 & 163-5)
Watched by a handful of spectators in the Red Stand, Jamaica, with a lead of 22, resumed on 22-1 with Blackwood on eight and Campbell on 10 and both batsmen hammered Permaul down the ground for boundaries in successive overs.
Campbell then tried to hit the left-arm spinner into the housing development area which was once a Sugar Cane plantation, only to find Ronsford Beaton at deep mid-wicket as the Jaguars made the break through 45 minutes into the day’s play with the score on 78-2. Campbell’s 28 came from 79 minutes, 53 balls with four fours.
In overcast conditions, Blackwood rocked back and pulled Narsingh Deonarine behind square for four before Skipper Tamar Lambert got going with a delicate steer off Permaul to the wide third man boundary before cutting Beaton behind point for another four.
But when three runs short of his fourth fifty in the tournament and 12th at this level, Blackwood edged a catch to Bramble off Permaul. Blackwell’s 47 lasted 82 minutes, 57 balls and was decorated with five fours and a six and his demise left Jamaica on 89-3.
Brandon King was caught behind, first ball, off Permaul who continues to be a thorn in the skin of opposition batsmen, who have generally looked at sea to the spinners and the visitors slipped to 98-5.
The sun smiled on Guyana’s success and cotton wool-like clouds danced merrily over the Providence sward from a clear blue sky, as a strong breeze stretched out the Guyana and Jamaica flags in the empty Grass Mound.
David Bernard joined Chadwick Walton and stroked Beaton, who lacked penetration on a spin-friendly track, handsomely for four past extra cover, prompting the introduction of Bishoo from Southern end.
Bishoo soon struck when he beat Walton (8) with one that turned for Bramble to accept the offering at 118-6 before Permaul struck one run later from the other end when Damion Jacobs was caught behind for a duck.
Bishoo removed Bernard (18) on the stroke of Lunch to leave the lads from Reggae Country in a deep hole at 123-8 with the lead just 145 runs.
After Lunch, Dawes (7) fell to Bishoo at 132-9 but Marquino Mindely got off the mark by clobbering Bishoo, who extracted bounce and turn from the surface, to the cover boundary before he edged the leg-spinner to Bramble to give him his ninth dismissal in the game.
Bramble, who hails from Skeldon but plays for Albion, bettered the Guyana record of eight dismissals in a match set by Geoffrey Murray for Guyana against the Combined Islands at Bourda in 1970 as he continues to enjoy his best season at this level. His record breaking performance behind the wicket yesterday makes him the leading Wicketkeeper in the tournament with 38 victims.
Devon Thomas of the Leewards has the record of 14 dismissals which he got against the Windwards last year in Grenada.
When the Jaguars began their run chase they lost Assad Fudadin (2), bowled off the inside edge at 14-1 by Dawes, who trapped Rajendra Chandrika (15) LBW at 31-2.
Chanderpaul came off the mark with a scintillating cover drive off Jacobs which reached the boundary like a bullet. However, the second highest West Indian run-scorer behind Brian Lara edged the next ball to slip where Campbell held the catch on the second attempt.
This was a rare instance that Chanderpaul had failed twice in the same game to virtually the same shot and he extended his run without a century to 20 innings and seven months to leave the Jaguars on 42-3.
Johnson was joined by Singh and the pair batted sensibly to see their team to 58-3 by Tea, with victory 103 runs away.
After Tea Johnson danced into Lambert and stroked effortlessly for four and clipped Odean Browne nicely off his legs for a couple of runs, while Singh found the gaps as they tucked into the bowling with increasing relish.
The Skipper looked compact and reached his second fifty of the match and his 23rd at this level from 118 minutes, 70 balls with five fours but played an impetuous shot off of Browne and was taken at deep mid-wicket when well set for a not out.
Singh was more level headed, reaching his second fifty for the tournament to go with his hundred in Trinidad, from 140 minutes, 133 balls with five fours and celebrated by chipping into Browne and smashing him for four before he was removed by Dawes with victory five runs away.
The next match for the Jaguars is set to start on the Friday at Providence where they take on the T&T Red Force.
