– Dolphin, St. Mary’s, St.George’s also win
By Rawle Welch
Chase Academy, one of the favourites to go all the way in this year’s Nestle Milo Under-20 Schools Football Tournament, was made to fight to earn a tough 2-1 win against South Ruimveldt yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Two second half goals from Isaiah Reddy in the 46th and 65th minutes ensured that his team ended at the top of the group, while South Ruimveldt also qualified for the knockout phase which commences next week, at the same venue.
However, it was not as easy as some felt it would be and South Ruimveldt gave the favourites a scare when they opened the scoring in the 24th minute through Shaquiel Blair, who rose above every defender to deliver a rasping header from a corner.
That goal came after South Ruimveldt was made to weather a period of attack from Chase Academy who was unlucky not to take the lead from a free kick that was tipped over the bar as it dipped menacingly under the crossbar.
A few goalmouth scrimmages were also met with resolute defending and timely clearances, before the South Georgetown team begun to assert themselves with a couple of offensive incursions that eventually lead to their opening goal.
They took a slim 1-0 lead to the break.
However, it was a different ball game very early in the second half as Chase Academy produced some threatening raids and netted one minute after the resumption when Reddy broke the offside trap to fire past the advancing goalkeeper to level the scores at 1-1.
The goal seemed to prompt panic in the South Ruimveldt camp and the rock solid defence that typified their play in the first half suddenly disappeared.
Reddy then sealed the deal when he raced on to a pass from centrefield to boot past the keeper with the defence trailing in his wake.
South Ruimveldt was a beaten force after then and they were lucky not to concede more goals before the final whistle sounded.
