– Caesar, George, McKenzie, Hooper also qualifies
Local junior athletes continued to claim places on the national team for the upcoming CARIFTA Games Trials yesterday at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Ground, Base Camp Ayangana in a trials set to select Guyana’s representative team.
Kenisha Phillips, who burst on the scene at the National Schools’ Championships two years ago, was the star of the day, clocking a blistering 24.6 seconds in the 200 metres to qualify for the U-18 Girl’s event.
The 13-year-old phenom from the East Coast easily topped last year’s CARIFTA representative, Avon Samuels, who finished second in 25.1 seconds.
Linden’s Compton Caesar continued his excellent showing from the first day on Saturday when he ran a brilliant 200m in the U-18 category in 21.6 seconds.
Cassey George, who qualified for the 1500m on Saturday, won the 800m Girl’s U-18 race in a time of 2:23.5s. Matthew Mckenzie also qualified for the Games, clocking 9:36.1s to eclipse the AAG mark of 9:40.0s.
Both top athletes, Jason Yaw and Tevin Garraway, in the U-20 Boy’s 200m had a disappointing showing, failing to finish the race.
Yaw cramped out in the preliminaries with Tevin Garraway cramping out in the final. It allowed Linton Mentis to win the final in 21.8s ahead of Kareem Purch 22.0s and Quacy Clementson 22.2s respectively.
Claudrice McKoy was dominant in the Girl’s 3000m, upsetting CARIFTA Games bronze medallist, Andrea Foster to win the event in 10:40.6s. Natricia Hooper qualified in the triple jump event with a leap of 12.26 to win the competition.
