Huge jaguar killed at Mashabo
Mashabo residents can now move about freely without looking over their shoulders, since a huge jaguar that once terrorized villagers was shot and killed early Sunday morning by a hunter.
Quado Vancooten, headmaster of the Mashabo Primary School, related that early Sunday morning residents of Mashabo Village were happy to learn of the capture of a large male jaguar that was killed by a gun trap set by a resident, Sydney Williams.
The jaguar had been terrorizing the Amerindian community for the last two months and was responsible for the deaths of about 14 dogs.
According to reports, Williams had set the trap near his dog kennel, knowing that the huge cat had a weakness for canines.
Sure enough, at around 04:00 hours yesterday the cat came calling and walked right into the trap.
The residents are relieved since the most of the population are very young children. The smaller children, Vancooten said, had to be supervised at all times, as there could be no telling when the huge cat would strike.
An experienced villager, Mr. Harry Elliot said that the jaguar that was killed was a fully mature male, judging from the size of its large fangs.
However, despite the slaying of the jaguar, villagers are still being watchful for a puma whose trail was spotted recently.
Mashabo is an Amerindian community situated on the west half of the Essequibo Coast, with a population of a little over 400.
