The Canadian Government has expressed a high level of confidence in The Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) ability to deliver a free, fair and transparent election at the upcoming National and Regional Elections, which are set for May 11th.
That pronouncement was made by Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Her Excellency, Dr. Nicole Giles.
The High Commissioner was the feature speaker at the annual Rotary Club of New Amsterdam’s World Understanding and Peace Dinner, which was held recently at the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC) building at Williamsburg, Corentyne.
The activity marked the 110th anniversary of the establishment of Rotary International worldwide.
Dr. Giles congratulated the Rotary movement for reaching the milestone and alluded to the great contribution being made by Rotary clubs around the world in improving lives and striving for peace. She stated that what the club is doing fits in amicably with its motto of “the advancement of international understanding and peace”.
This issue of peace and understanding is needed the world over at the moment because of the many crises that have emerged. Many of the impending situations worldwide have come about due to the many conflicts, disputes and disasters which have resulted in a considerable loss of life.
She alluded to the ongoing military aggressions by Russia in Ukraine, which has already cost the lives of more than 5,300 people. She also mentioned the barbaric actions of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, where people are being abducted and killed in various countries, including Syria.
Canada, she said, is addressing pressing challenges for people in the Americas, through assistance in areas such as food security, maternal and child health, child and youth protection, and access to quality education among others.
She further stated that peace and understanding are also built on the principle of mutual respect which governs interactions with fellow human beings. This has to be practiced in order for it to be effective, especially during periods where emotions can easily supersede mutual respect such as during elections.
High Commissioner Giles stated that Canada welcomes the announcement of the elections and noted that a free, fair and transparent election plays a critical role in any democracy. “It is through elections that citizens chose their government and have their voices heard.”
She mentioned that it is hoped that the election will help to unlock the political stalemate that has sometimes characterised politics in Guyana over the past few years, and allow Guyana to continue to progress on the path of peaceful development.”
“Canada is committed to working with the Government of Guyana, GECOM, all political parties and civil society to support free, fair and peaceful elections as the democratic expression of the will of the Guyanese people,” she remarked. She once again congratulated the Rotarians for the outstanding work that they are doing.
