A mature and classy half century from national Under-17 opener Adrian Sukwah and a four wicket haul from his Albion team mate Asif Ally led the powerful Lower Corentyne Under-17 team to a massive 9-wicket victory over New Amsterdam/Canje Combined in the final of the Republic Bank Guyana Limited Inter Zone 2014 Under-17 competition played last Saturday at the Albion Sports Complex.
The winning Lower Corentyne team poses with their trophies and members of the Berbice Cricket Board.
New Amsterdam/Canje won the toss and elected to take first strike with a reasonable start of 23 before they lost the prolific Guyana Under-15 all rounder Kevin Sinclair for 8. From then on, they struggled to score against a disciplined attack and were bowled out for a paltry 112 in 42 of their allowed 50 overs. Skipper Jaleel Jaffar top scored with 22. He was supported by Kyle Michael with 19 and Sasenarine Sukhu 18. Off spinner Asif Ally spun webs around the batsmen with 4 for 20 off 10 overs. Skipper Brandon Persaud supported with 3 for 16 from 6 overs.
In reply, Albion junior opening pair Adrian Sukwah and Ritesh Omrao made light work of the total with very attractive and sensible batting. They reached 113 for 1 with Adrian Sukwah reaming unbeaten on 67. Umrao was run out for 32.
At the presentation ceremony after the match, Adrian Sukwah was named man-of-the-match. Speaking on behalf of the board, President Anil Beharry thanked the management of Albion Estate, the groundsmen, the players who participated, the junior selection panel and most of all the sponsors, Republic Bank Guyana Limited. He said that the board looks forward for their continued support.
