NCW hosts successful women’s conference
Under the theme “Women For National Unity”, the women’s arm of the People’s

National Congress Reform (PNCR) — the National Congress of Women (NCW)—on Thursday hosted a Women’s forum at its 44 Public Road, Kitty Headquarters.
This event was held in observance of International Women’s Day which is to be celebrated tomorrow.
However, NCW also used the opportunity to mobilize women and inform about the role they are expected to play in the upcoming General and Regional Elections.
This Forum brought together women from the 10 Administrative Regions of Guyana and was held with the patronage of PNCR leader, David Granger who spoke extensively about the struggle of women in Guyana.
He told the gathering of about 200 that the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition will put the elevation of women as a main priority when it gets into power.
He said that an APNU+AFC administration will “get the economic show on the road and make women independent.”
Granger also spoke about the importance of women placing education as a priority. He said that there is not much to stop educated women from becoming successful but noted that there are lots of obstacles in the way that are hampering female education. In this regard, Granger pointed out poverty and teenage pregnancy.
He told the gathering dominated by women that they must look out for each other and keep a keen eye out for younger women who may fall off track.
AFC executive member, Cathy Hughes, and PNCR Valarie Sharpe and Volda Lawrence also spoke at the forum.
Hughes spoke about the importance of unity among women while Sharpe spoke about women and Entrepreneurship. Lawrence spoke about the role of women in politics.
There were also discussions on issues affecting women. Those in attendance actively participated in an effort to secure a “better future for women.”
