Residents of Riverview, Ruimveldt are complaining about the absence of
potable water due to two broken main pipelines.
According to reports, a hymac operator attached to the Ministry of Transport and Hydraulics, went to the area to clear the drains, unaware of the pipelines. By the time the contractor could be cautioned by residents about the lines they were already ripped out.
According to Morris Fernandes, of lot 21 Riverview, Ruimveldt, his bridge is under water and also he is unable to use water from the tap as it has been compromised by dirty water that is seeping through the broken pipes. He said that he now has to buy water from a water distillation truck for domestic consumption.
Kaieteur News understands that there are more than 100 persons residing in the backlands close to the Demerara River. They are forced to use the contaminated water.
He lamented that there are a lot of children in the area whose health is at risk. He added that the children are seen playing in the dirty water. “They even played Phagwah with the nasty water”. The children will not see the water as harmful but in reality it is harmful to their lives, opined
Fernandes.
At Fernandes’s residence yesterday, the bridge leading to his yard, where he owns and operates a small business, was under water. Persons were seen walking and riding through the water to make their purchases.
The man said that he tried to summon the help of Guyana Water Incorporation (GWI) but all he got was an answering machine after he was promised by a female customer agent of GWI that she will try to assist him. “We do not mind digging up to find the main lines to fix the pipes, but that would be tampering” said Fernandes.
It was related to this newspaper that persons from the City Constabulary had gone to the area to do an estimate of the damaged pipelines.
After close to a week the residents are yet to get a word from the Ministry of Transport and Hydraulics which caused the damage. The residents, with much understanding that it was a genuine mistake are asking that the pipelines be repaired as the leak is a developing health problem and inconvenience to the Riverview, Ruimveldt residents.
Efforts by this newspaper to contact the Minister of Transport and Hydraulics were up to press time futile.
