As a prelude to International Women’s Day, which is observed annually the world over, on March 8, the Guyana Association of Woman Police yesterday conducted a medical outreach programme.
The event, which was staged at the Pouderoyen Market Tarmac, West Bank Demerara, was one that saw the collaboration of a number of health affiliated organisations that gathered to offer a number of services to residents of the surrounding communities.
According to Coordinator of the outreach, Assistant Superintendent Amanda Hermonstine, yesterday ‘s event in the Police ‘D’ Division marked the second such undertaking by the Association to commemorate International Women’s Day. A previous medical outreach for this purpose was held in Georgetown, the Police ‘A’ Division. “We chose West Demerara because we realised that Georgetown is central and everything is happening in Georgetown so we decided to shift the activity,” said the Assistant Superintendent.
She added that the focus on health was premised on the fact that there are reports of increasing numbers of health challenges such as diabetes and high blood pressure that must be closely
addressed in order to help preserve the wellbeing of the population, particularly that of women.
“This is happening not only to the aged persons but also young people and so that motivated us to have this outreach,” related Hermonstine.
She said that while putting measures in place for the event was no small task, the forthcoming support was overwhelming. Among those with booths offering various health services yesterday were: The Guyana Defence Force, the various Departments of the Ministry of Health, the National AIDS Programme Secretariat, The Region Three Health and Wellness Club, the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association, among others, that offered general health.
But while the primary focus was on the health of women, Hermonstine noted that men certainly were not neglected since they too were able to benefit from the services offered yesterday.
President of the Association, Senior Superintendent, Maxine Graham, as she lauded the efforts of Hermonstine to pull off yesterday’s outreach as part of the Force’s observance of International Women’s Day alluded to the fact that a sizeable number of women make up the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
She said that there are in excess of 1,500 women employed within the GPF, including Special Constabulary. However, she asserted that regular female ranks number 810.
