DEAR EDITOR,
In addition to the poor quality of media coverage of the Neesa Gopaul trial, it is needless to say that I feel very disenfranchised by the verdict. As many Guyanese watched with disdain the pictures of those two monsters on the various front-pages of the dailies yesterday, the thought of our taxpayers’ monies having to fund their breakfasts, lunches and dinners, must have surely crossed their minds as well.
I say poor quality of media coverage, since the television media, which had more advantage to report the matter, did not utilize the various journalistic resources, such as more interviews, comments, and stances from various prominent and relevant resource persons. What may prominent, well-seasoned attorneys, judges, magistrates, police as well as government officials have had to say about the trial and the verdict? Not that we don’t have talented journalists, but it was so disappointing; the entire thing reflected much laziness.
What Red Thread and the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association should have been protesting was the resumption of the death penalty, especially for those two animals!
But readers like myself were glued to the national newspapers: the Kaieteur and Stabroek News which, given the limited resources, provided some sort of acceptable coverage. Yet, there could have been analysis, especially of these high-profile murder cases. And I know that both newspapers possess the skills and talented journalists that could have ensured same.
Notwithstanding, the two convicts now ride into the sunset. Most of us would never hear anything about them anymore. They would spend the rest of their lives behind bars, which I feel is not enough. Guyana needs to resuscitate the death penalty and send a strong message to would-be criminals that these things are just not acceptable. ‘Heinous’ does not even delve into describing the horrible act by a mother and her jealous lover.
Now they will be living off our taxes.
