Thirty young persons who underwent more than 144 hours of Information Communications Technology (ICT) Training, graduated on Tuesday at the Glasgow Community Centre, East Bank Berbice.
Delivering the charge and feature address to the graduates were Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh. The training was conducted over a six-week period, under the tutorship of Leah Moses.
Minister Singh underscored the value of ICT training, in the context of Guyana’s developing economy. “The graduation ceremony is just a small event in Glasgow, a little IT centre, where 30 persons are graduating. Of course that is what it is. But I see this as part of a bigger picture, I see this as a piece in a bigger puzzle, which, when it is assembled reveals the picture of a modern, bright, prosperous Guyana for all Guyanese,” he said.
“Every single Guyanese person must enjoy the benefits of modern technology. No Guyanese person must be left behind. That is why we are implementing the One Laptop Per Family Programme (OLPF), under which 90,000 laptops have been distributed. We have already distributed 55,000 (laptops).”
Dr. Singh added that the initiative is aimed at making owning a computer more affordable. “We have said, even in our most vulnerable homes, where perhaps because of affordability, a computer cannot be purchased for the benefit of persons of that home, we will put a computer in that home. That is why we are implementing training programmes like this, and are building IT laboratories in the secondary school,” he added.
The students were engaged in training involving Literacy, Basic Math and English, Sexual and Reproductive Health, along with HIV/AIDS and prevention, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Office Outlook, Office Access, MS Publisher, Power Point, Numeracy Basic Office Ethics, Introduction to computers and Window XP, Microsoft Word.
