Embattled Skeldon Estate Manager, Dave Kumar, who in recent times was said to be involved in a number of public incidents and even clashed with the police, has been charged.
Kumar appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh in the Springlands Magistrate’s court on two charges – riotous behaviour and assaulting a peace officer with intent to avoid arrest.
Kumar was earlier summoned to appear in the Springlands Magistrate’s court, on February 12, last, but failed to show up.
He was represented by three lawyers—Ramesh Rajkumar and former Magistrates Krisendat Persaud and Chandra Sohan. The defence lawyers asked for minimal bail. However Kumar was released on his own recognizance.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Godfrey Playter did not object to bail.
According to the prosecution on December 12, around 21:30 hrs, the police were conducting patrols in the Corriverton area and Kumar was being driven in a Guysuco vehicle when it was stopped by ranks on patrol. The Manager reportedly became abusive.
Kumar was cautioned about his behaviour, but he allegedly continued using expletives. The driver was asked to turn on the interior lights and Kumar reportedly launched a series of expletives at the police.
Kumar was again warned about his behaviour, but the charge said that he refused to desist. The police decided that it was time to have Kumar step out of the vehicle. The Manager was said to have declined and issued a challenge to the police. The driver was then asked to drive into the compound, a request with which he complied. Kumar was eventually removed from the vehicle and taken into the station, but not without some resistance.
He is expected to reappear in court on April 16.
