A convicted cocaine swallower allegedly decided to try a new way of transporting the drug but failed, when he was busted with the illegal drug strapped to his thighs.
Yesterday, Terry De Freitas was remanded to prison after it was alleged he tried to traffic cocaine at the Ogle International Airport, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The 33 year-old man of 40 Fifth Street, Bartica, denied that on March 4 at the airport he had in his possession 2.13kg of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
According to Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) prosecutor Oswald Massiah, on the day in question De Freitas was an outgoing passenger on a LIAT flight destined for Barbados when he was caught with the drug. The accused was represented by Attorney Dexter Todd.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry ordered that De Freitas, a taxi driver, make his next court appearance on March 9, at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
De Freitas was given a four-year sentence (on January 27, 2012) and fined $30,000 for swallowing cocaine. He admitted to swallowing 86 pellets of the illicit substance with the intent to smuggle it out of the country when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
At that time De Freitas was an office assistant at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
De Freitas was busted on January 26, 2012 by CANU ranks when he attempted to leave Guyana aboard a BWIA flight destined for the Cayman Islands.
At the time of the bust the defendant was supposed to have been on duty at his place of work. Instead, he booked a flight for the said location and presented himself at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri, at around 04:30 hours.
Vigilant drug ranks at the airport became suspicious when they noticed that he was travelling with only a few pieces of clothing. De Freitas was stopped from boarding the plane and taken to be questioned.
His responses to the questions aroused more suspicion and he was taken to CANU headquarters to be further interrogated. The response the drug officers got from De Freitas caused them to take the suspect to a medical institution where it was discovered via X-ray that he had indeed swallowed foreign objects. He later excreted 86 pellets, which amounted to 1.044 kilograms of cocaine, while under close watch.
