Dear Editor,
The maxim “it never rains but pours” truly fits squarely at the feet of this government. As one follows the events of the day, the only question that comes to mind is “What else should I expect to hear or read on the abuse of power from our government”? I keep telling myself that they will at least tell Guyanese that we have “screwed up” and a genuine effort will be made to turn things around. Not hearing the truth from this government only leaves me to believe that they either don’t care what others say or think, or they are totally incompetent to get anything right.
In an earlier letter to the editor, I shared the view that the Hope canal project was not only poorly conceived, but it has been a waste of our tax dollars. The person(s) who recommended this project should be banned from holding public office for a long time. Recently, I read that the conservancy level is alarmingly low, which will result in added cost to our rice farmers. I hope that the rain comes to rescue our farmers. I had told the government then, and I am repeating now, that we should have spent all that resources to extend our conservancy, strengthen the dams, and to do whatever we had to do to keep sufficient water for our farmers and other users. Instead, we are spending billions of dollars to channel scarce, fresh water into the Atlantic.
Today, I am reading that the HPS has finally admitted what all Guyana already knew. The Marriot hotel is a farce, and it was built solely to avenge the owner of our prestigious Pegasus. Now that the genie has come out of the bottle, is there any charge that can be laid to these deceivers who consistently lied to the Guyanese? The big question that must now be answered is where did NICIL get the money from to build the hotel? How much had to be paid to Marriot to use their name? Who is paying the top level managers employed? Was this project financed by GGMC?
Talking of GGMC, another fiasco has been unearthed. GGMC, knowing that the day of accountability is fast approaching, published a long laundry list of illegal disbursements made from that agency. Now that the courts have demanded some answers, this government, who have consistently flaunted the rule of law, has done it again. Despite the Chief Justice ruling, Cabinet has now approved a transfer of the funds for the same amount to Housing. Where is the decency in these scumbags? Under what authority did cabinet use to approve such a transfer? It is finally time to bring this chapter of our country to an end.
We know that “power corrupts” and “absolute power corrupts absolutely” This PPP government must not be allowed to continue. They have treated this country with disdain and disrespect for far too long. I am calling for all Guyanese of Indian descent; please do not allow this set of corrupt and vulgar people, who has destroyed the dream of Dr. Jagan, to continue in office. You have lived among Guyanese of African descent, and you know how good and genuine they are. Of course, there are African Guyanese who are racist and vulgar, as there are Indian Guyanese who are racist and vulgar. Do not allow the minority of bad people to taint your mind and to think that the entire African population is bad. They are not. We have all seen how helpful our African brothers and sisters are towards us when we are really in need. I have seen African boys rushing to the help of persons whose mini bus had plunged into a trench. Even though most of the occupants were Indians, that did not stop our African brothers from rescuing them. I am certain all of us have benefited from the goodness of our African neighbours. Do not allow fear to enter our hearts as we decide of how to vote. The PPP will play the race card in their bottom house meetings, please confront them and let them know that we are all Guyanese.
Guyanese, it is time to wake up. It is time to break loose. It is time to remove the shackle of racism and bigotry. It is time for healing. It is time for us to work together, regardless of our ancestry. It is time to celebrate our Amerindian, African, Chinese, Portuguese and Indian cultures in its truest form. It is time to celebrate our real Guyanese identity. We are neither African nor Indian, we are Guyanese. It is time to live as true Guyanese. It is time for a new Government. It is time for you to make it happen.
