Police detainee’s death…Police conduct internal investigation

their duties after the death of 28-year-old Zaharadeen Razan of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara. Razan died in police custody after he was locked up at the Parika Police Station.
The father of three was arrested and taken into custody on Tuesday February 24, following a report of damage to property that was made against him. The following day Razan was taken for medical treatment at the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
Investigations are also being conducted by the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
Ranks on duty had reported that Razan had been bashing his head against the walls of the lockups and had suffered a seizure.
A post-mortem confirmed that the man had died as a result of a seizure, and that there was blunt trauma to the head which was consistent with the seizure.
“In this latest case, as you are aware, the police did nothing inappropriately to the individual; but if there were cases of neglect, if the police knew what was going on in the lock-ups and did not take the appropriate action, we have to find out,” Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud told the media.
He noted that ranks on duty that morning were aware that something was amiss in the lock-ups at the station but failed to act accordingly.
Meanwhile, the father of the dead man, Majeed Razan, has rejected the police explanation as well as the post mortem report. Mr. Razan said that he is confident that his son’s death occurred within the confines of the lock-ups where he was brutalized.
After inspecting his son’s body at the morgue, he claimed that his son had marks about his body which were consistent with assault. The elder Razan, who was a Rural Constable (RC) for over a decade, said he intends to pursue justice for his son.
