Two of three bandits who robbed a Stabroek Market vegetable vendor at his Mahaica, East Coast Demerara home were last evening hospitalized after swift response by police officers quashed their escape plans.
The assailants sustained injury following a dramatic chase which resulted in them driving into a trench during an exchange of gun fire with police officers.
Kaieteur News understands that the police ranks were able to recover an undisclosed amount of cash stolen by the thieves and a .38 revolver with two live matching rounds. The men’s apprehension was the result of keen observation by the robbery victim’s neighbour who figured something was amiss when he saw a man walking into the vendor’s property. He immediately went for help.
According to reports, around 20:00hours last evening, three men entered the Supply, Mahaica, home of the vendor and robbed him of cash before shooting him. It was related that the vendor’s neighbour was seated in his vehicle after arriving home from work and noticed a man armed with a gun was heading in the direction of the victim’s residence.
The neighbour then left for the nearest police station where he alerted police ranks of what was taking place. The neighbour transported the ranks to the location and they arrived just in time to see the bandits speeding out of the housing scheme in a Toyota 192.
Reports are that the police ranks, in the civilian’s car, tracked the bandits who had driven to Mahaica Old Road in the vicinity of Unity. On noticing that they were being trailed the bandits reportedly shot at the ranks who in turn returned fire.
It is believed that the driver of the getaway car was not familiar with the area since he misjudged a turn and ended up in a relatively deep trench. The ranks were able to apprehend one of the bandits who attempted to walk under water. However, the man’s dread locks sold him out since the police ranks noticed his hair floating on the water top. He was pulled out of the trench and arrested.
Another rank who noticed bubbles coming from the area where the car had ended up jumped into the water and was able to apprehend another bandit, but not without a challenge. The rank and the bandit ended up in a scuffle and that is when the rank reportedly felt the third assailant swim pass his feet and escape.
The rank was able to overpower the second bandit and he too was apprehended. The two men were transported to the Mahaicony Hospital where they are under police guard.
