A reported sexual assault committed against an office staff attached to Region Seven Department of Education, is likely to be brought to the attention of the Court today. This publication was reliably informed that the allegation of sexual assault which occurred in early January, saw an 18-year-old (name withheld) resigning her position within the Education Department.
Reports are that the act was committed by the District Education Officer (DEO) (name withheld), whom this publication understands has been charged and is expected to appear at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court today.
The young woman at the centre of the allegation had resigned last month reportedly, because of constant disparaging remarks from her colleagues.
The woman during an earlier interview with this publication had disclosed that from all indications, nothing was being done by senior officials within the Department of Education or even at the level of Central Ministry.
The matter was however, reported to the Bartica Police Station where the man was arrested and subsequently released on bail.
This publication was informed that Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, had instructed that the DEO be sent off the job. However, this publication was able to confirm that the man was still on the job up to yesterday.
While several reports reaching this publication suggest that the man was not off the job, a telephone call to the Department of Education by this publication yesterday, validated reports that the man was fully undertaking his function as DEO.
The distraught woman during an interview with this publication had given a detailed account of the sexual assault that occurred on Thursday January 22, 2015. She related a tale of being spoken to and touched in a derogatory manner. The traumatised woman also claimed that the alleged perpetrator is well known to her as he taught her in school.
Manickchand, this newspaper was told, had promised to look into the matter following publication of the woman’s allegations. This publication was also told that the Minister would have made contact with the woman. This never occurred.
The woman had disclosed how she had declined an offer from senior officials within the Department, to be transferred, but decided to resign instead since some of her colleagues, some of whom had initially sympathised with her, started to wield disparaging remarks.
Her move to resign was the result of frustration and fear which was prompted by the fact that she was being treated like a villain rather than a victim, she intimated.
The woman had related too, that after reporting the matter to staffers which resulted in it becoming the subject of an office meeting, the DEO’s mere response was “I’m sorry but whatever she (name withheld) said is true.”
