Dear Editor,
Please note that an article published in today’s Kaieteur newspaper entitled “President ‘ready to rumble’ but…” and written by Abena Rockliffe (page 3) while very informative and serving a very important purpose has in fact some elements of ambiguity which I will proceed to outline.
In the fifth paragraph which says “On Saturday, the President in an interview said that his no show at that debate (the send debate organised by Merundoi) was due to the fact that it was horribly organised.”
While after having a discussion with Abena I understand where she’s coming from, the way the president’s comments are reported leads one to believe that ; the same organisation which organised the first debate (held at the University of Guyana) is the same organisation that organised the second. This is in fact not the case. The first debate was organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Guyana and involved much heckling and jeering, in fact, very little crowd control.
The second debate organised by Merundoi was very well organised. The debates were done to a very high standard and received high praise from civil society, members of the diaspora who saw the debates streamed live, members of the media as well as foreign embassies. Furthermore, copies of this event are available on the internet as well as on DVD at any request.
Merundoi is requesting that the article be clarified to reflect what really happened.
We appreciate your excellent journalism and look forward to more articles pressing for debates to become a regular feature in the country.
