Dear Editor,
Kindly allow me to highlight my concern over the slow pace at which the Ministry of Education is dealing with teachers, who have dedicated their entire life, moulding the nation’s children.
Having listened to several complaints from teachers across the country, especially those from the hinterland regions, I couldn’t stay quiet about this issue.
These hinterland teachers have to travel constantly to and from their home, in connection with their gratuity. In doing so, these people incur thousands of dollars in expenses because those in- charge, seem to be dragging their feet on the issue. The Ministry should consider that some of these teachers do not have relatives living in Georgetown. Thus, they are faced with financial constraints while there.
One woman from the hinterland, who is afraid of victimization, had quite a story to tell. It was because of her that I decided to write. She has been going around in circles for three years trying to get what is rightfully hers, but to no avail.
She said that those in charge at the Ministry keep sending her from one section to the other. On many occasions she had to sit there all day just to make an enquiry. Her story is a very heart-breaking one and I could not believe that she has been putting up with this.
So I told her to seek a lawyer but she is reluctant to do so because she believes that this will only ‘dirty the water’ and she may never receive her full payment.
I am therefore suggesting that the Ministry of Education put mechanism in place so that these people be paid immediately. The ministry should also do whatever it takes to discontinue this trend and pay these people in a timely manner.
