Magistrate Annette Singh remanded a man to prison yesterday after he was charged with stealing a large sum of money from his grandfather.
James McDonald, 32, of 59 Bent and Lime Streets, Werk-en-Rust, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that between January 9 and 10, he stole $75,000 from Eric Abbensetts.
The man who was unrepresented by an attorney said that he did not steal the amount of money his grandfather is claiming.
Police prosecutor Aduni Inniss stated that the defendant and the virtual complainant (VC) are known to each other. She stated that the VC is the grandfather of the defendant. She added that the defendant is in the habit of going to his grandfather’s house and picking up his money.
On the day in question, the defendant went to his grandfather’s home and asked him if he could move back into the house. The grandfather agreed. Before the elderly man retired to bed he made several checks for his grandson, and then noticed that his money was gone, along with the younger man.
The matter was reported to the Alberttown Police Station and the suspect was arrested and charged.
The prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant is unemployed and has no fixed place of abode.
McDonald will return to court on March 17 for statements.
