The days are quickly going and the excitement is already in the air as the organizers of the Kashif and Shanghai Entertainment group continue to put the modalities in place for a qualitative and action packed tournament.
Smiles all around as the cheque exchanges hands from Mr. Mohamed to Kashif Muhammad while Mr. Major looks on appreciatively.
From all indications local football fans are in for a big treat from the time of the first whistle on Friday March 20 at the DCC Ground, Alberttown up to the final game scheduled for the National Stadium Providence on Sunday April 5.
They say that old habits die hard and this could not have been more strongly affirmed that yesterday morning when Mohammad Enterprise of Lombard Street once again acquiesced to a lucrative sponsorship deal to offset the stringent expenses accrued by the organizers.
So it was that the two K&S Directors, Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major and Kashif Mohamed trooped to the Lombard Street establishment of the sponsor where the proprietor, Nazim Mohammad, handed over a lucrative cheque to the tune of over two million dollars plus several replica trophies for all of the participating teams.
Mr. Mohammad admitted that he feels a sense of commitment to the advancement of the tournament since he has his roots in the Mining Town of Linden, the place of inauguration of the tournament. He also said that his organization is committed to the development of all sports disciplines and as such had no problem in readily affirming to the deal.
Mr. Muhammad expressed delight at receiving the gift even as he noted that his benefactor has been on board for 24 years, one year shy of the existence of the tournament. The Kashif and Shanghai Director further assured the public that all systems are in place for a qualitative tournament and they have recently convened a meeting with referees to share a common understanding of the objectives of the tournament so as to ensure that all principals could have a common understanding of what is expected of them.
Meanwhile, media operatives were informed that renovation works to the Demerara Cricket Club ground are going rapidly apace and the recently installed light fixtures are in pristine condition. “We are sparing no effort to give the fans the qualitative tournament they have grown accustomed to,” explained Mr. Major.
The latest act of chivalry has supported that of several other corporate citizens, all committed to the success of the tournament including DDL, HJTV, Church’s Chicken, Sonic Business Services, Club 704, JGS and Ansa McAl among others. In all, sixteen teams will vie for the top spot including Alpha United, Pele, Western Tigers, Rhythm Squad, GFC, Victoria Kings, Mahaica Determinators, New Amsterdam United, Slingerz FC, Den Amstel FC, Grove Hi Tec, Agricola Red Triangle, Winners’ Connection, Hi Stars and Bartica Beacon.
The tournament will be officially launched with a march past at the DCC Ground. The winning team will cart off the two million dollars put up by Mohammad’s Enterprise with the runners up winning half that amount. The third and fourth place prizes are five hundred thousand and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars respectively. There will also be trophies which will be presented for individual and team performances.
