Dear Sir,
“While nothing in life is as sure as death, the untimeliness of it always leaves one in a state of shock, compounded by an element of surprise, in some instances”! As such, I was completely shocked, when I heard of the death of Mervyn ‘Pug’ Wilson.
However, editor it would be remiss of me not to express my utter dismay, in relation to the treatment meted out to the memory of the late individual, from the local football fraternity consisting of: GFF’s Normalisation Committee, GFA, National Coaches Association and the National Sports Commission.
As a former National Under-19 player, also a former National Coach both at the junior and senior levels, the individual had deserved mention publicly, for his previous contribution to the sport, despite how he was viewed.
Suffice it to say, not even a public expression of condolence to the bereaved family! Where are morals? Meanwhile, the late ‘Pug’ who was also referred to as “Communist” following his successful completion of a Football Coaching Course in the then East Germany where he obtained a Diploma.
As a former coach attached to the National Sports Commission, in the 70’s, Wilson achieved resounding success with a schools’ team from Waramadong, which defeated every Under-16 school team in Georgetown that they played against.
In their final match against a combined Georgetown schools’ lineup, a draw was the fulltime result. Coaching stints with GNS, GDF and Alpha United brought about meaningful success also locally, at the club level, including a runner-up spot with Alpha United, in a final of the Annual Kashif & Shangai K.O.
At the national level the crowning moment of Wilson’s career came when as a member of the national coaching staff, in 1986 Guyana advanced its furtherest ever in the Olympics Qualifiers. But mass absconding of players in the U.S.A, en-route to Mexico for a return fixture resulted in Guyana fielding a depleted lineup to lose by an embarrassing 9-0 margin.
To his sorrowing family members, relatives, friends and colleagues, kindly accept my sincerest condolences. May His Soul Rest In Peace!
