A 49-year-old businesswoman was yesterday afternoon robbed while transacting business at Transport and Harbours Department, on Water Street.
The traumatized victim, who asked to remain unidentified, told this publication that she was sitting in the company’s bond when she was approached by a dreadlocked man wearing a stocking over his hair. She said the man placed a gun to her head before snatching her handbag which contained US$140, $100,000 in Guyana currency, National Identification card, Scotiabank card and Scotiabank checkbook.
The bandit is said to have dashed through a bushy area adjacent to the establishment’s office which led to Water Street where his accomplice awaited on a CG motorcycle. The two bandits made good their escape, riding south along Water Street.
Kaieteur News understands that this is the second time in less than a month that the businesswoman, who runs a business in the North West District, has been robbed.
On February 4, the woman had just stepped out of a downtown restaurant after having lunch with her husband and the couple’s driver when she was attacked and robbed. The men attacked the woman while her husband went to the washroom and the driver approached the car.
One of the men had grabbed her handbag but she held on to it. The driver saw what was happening and he picked up a piece of wood, but the robber’s accomplice pulled out a gun. She said the bag contained $4.5 million, passports and other documents. The culprits had on that occasion also made good their escape on a CG motorcycle.
The businesswoman is speculating that the two robberies may have been carried out by the same perpetrators considering the similarity in modus operandi. Investigations are continuing into yesterday’s matter.
