The police in Berbice on Saturday travelled more than 18 miles through rough terrain into the backlands of No.75 Village, Upper Corentyne and recovered a number of items including a tractor that were stolen during a robbery at a ranch owned by a rice and cattle farmer a few days before.
But while the police were able to recover the items, they are still working on capturing the bandits who they believe are known characters.
According to information, watchman Rabindranauth Rajnauth called “Bolo” 45 of No.72 Village was alone at the ranch owned by his relative Parsram Rajnauth, 65, of Lot 22 No. 72 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, which is situated in the back dam.
This newspaper learnt that around 17:00 hrs on Friday last, Rajnauth was preparing to close up the camp for the day when he was attacked by two men. One was armed with a long gun while the other had a short gun.
The bandits tied up the watchman and made off with a number of items including a Massey Ferguson Tractor, chainsaw, motor blow brush cutter, DVR and cell phone.
The watchman was eventually able to free himself and made his way to another camp located some distance away, where he reported the matter and sought help. His boss was contacted and along with others they traveled to the area. A search was launched but nothing was found.
The police were contacted and they went to the remote area, arriving there at around 11:00 hrs and immediately went to work.
They combed the area and found tractor tracks which pointed in the direction of the bandits’ escape.
More searches in the remote areas eventually led them to the tractors and other items that were stashed in the, bushy, swampy areas.
The items were collected and taken to the Springlands Police Station where they were lodged. A check of the DVR showed that the bandits are known and have been on the police’s radar for a while.
