Queen’s College (QC) showed why they are among the favoured teams to do well in this year’s Nestle Milo Under-20 Schools Football Competition after registering an impressive 5-0 win over North Georgetown as the round-robin phase of the tournament concluded yesterday, at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Playing in the third fixture of the day, the lads from Thomas Lands took the lead as early as the 5th minute through Stephen King, who sprinted on to a weak clearance following a goalmouth scrimmage to fire past the goalkeeper into the roof of the net.
Shortly after, North Georgetown seemed to be getting into their groove and had two solid opportunities to level the game following back to back corners, but a timely clearance from an opposing defender after the goalkeeper was left stranded in the first instance and a header that sailed inches over the crossbar kept QC in the ascendancy.
Just when the tide seemed to be turning in North Georgetown’s favour after repeated offensive forays, QC netted on a swift counter-attack when Jayadev Mona curled a right-footer just inside the right upright in the 17th minute.
Three minutes later he returned to pounce on a pass delivered from just outside the box to beat the scrambling keeper to his right, the ball landing in the far corner. It signaled that the floodgates were open and all North Georgetown could do is watch as their defence was cut to shreds with King and Mona looking menacing in attack.
King displaying silky skills was a thorn in the North Georgetown defence and it was on one such occasion when he mesmerized the last defender who had no choice, but to bring him down inside the penalty area and the foul was spotted by the referee who indicated a spot kick immediately.
King got up and side-footed his attempt into the left-side of the goal to complete his brace in the 25th minute. Mona then sealed a treble after beating the keeper from close range in the 31st minute as QC raced to a 5-0 lead which they took to the break.
Despite dominating possession in the final period, QC failed to net another goal as North Georgetown defended tenaciously to salvage a bit of pride. Mae’s and School of Nations matchup was the most exciting encounter of the day with the former scraping a 3-2 victory.
On target for the winning team was Darshan Persaud, who many feel is one of the most promising players seen so far in the tournament, netting a double in the 54th and 65th minutes, while Hakiem Hutson’s 14th minute strike had given them the lead.
Shaquille Bess in the 62nd minute and Lyndon Dorway’s 70th were the players in the score sheet for School of Nations. Kingston mauled David Rose 10-0 with Vincent Thomas-11th,13th, 15th and 23rd, Allister Holder-39th, 43rd and 50th, Ryan Trotz-46th and 49th and an own Goal-20th accounting for their tally. Morgan Learning Institue won by walkover from Houston Secondary.
Meanwhile, in Saturday’s results: Defending champion Lodge inflicted an 8-2 drubbing on Cummings Lodge to keep their aspirations of successfully retaining the title on track, while Richard Ishmael sent Charlestown crashing out of the tournament after edging them 2-1.
North Ruimveldt then hammered a hapless Freeburg 6-0 and St. Rose’s cruised past St. Joseph’s 3-0.
Winners of the event will pocket the championship trophy and $500,000 towards the building of any school project while the second, third and fourth placed sides will pocket $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively towards the funding of a school venture and the corresponding accolade.
On the individual side, awards will be given for the event’s most valuable player, highest goal scorer and best goal keeper while four full scholarships to attend Chase Academy free of cost will also be up for grabs.
