Residents of some villages on the Corentyne are upset with the substandard work being done by contractors in Berbice, citing government’s rush to do as much work as possible before the upcoming May 11th General Elections.
The residents are even more upset with a response given by the Regional Administration of Region Six to a previous article published by the Kaieteur News, in which they had condemned the volume of substandard work being done.
The Regional Administration had disputed the claim by residents and defended a number of works done in the county.
Residents recently showed the media substandard work done on a number of streets in the Hampshire area.
They stated that the streets were supposed to be done with Asphalt, but the material that was used was not asphalt and if it was, it was a very poor quality.
“The people really licking up,” one resident stated. “I never know asphalt does fly and spring dust when it done, if you see dust when vehicle pass,” the man said.
“Right now people house full with dust. The contractor does send someone steady to sweep off the dust from the street. You know wha them call them thing this? Election road! But we too smart fuh them thing that now. Them can’t fool we so steady.”
The residents used their feet to show the amount of dust on top of what was supposed to be asphalt.
The residents also showed what appears to be cow hole on the asphalt. One woman stated, “When dem dog pee (urine) on it, the whole thing ah loose up and the pee (urine) ah soak through.”
One engineer who inspected the work stated that apart from the substandard quality of work done by the contractor, the mixture of the asphalt was very poor. He said that the supplier should be brought to books. The street, he opined, would not last for more than four months and with heavy rain and traffic, it will break up even faster.
He is asking for an investigation to be done.
The residents need answers and want the Regional Administration and the relevant government ministries to take immediate corrective action to remedy the situation.
