As the countdown continues for the grand opening of the 25th edition of the
Kashif and Shanghai Football extravaganza, representatives of the participating clubs convened yesterday morning at the Club 704, Lamaha and Albert Streets, Georgetown for the debriefing sessions as the organizing principals ensure that all of the logistics are attended to before ‘D Day.’
Sixteen teams will vie for the top spot and each of those units was represented when the K&S principals, Kashif Mohamed and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, laid out the rules and objectives for an incident free and exciting tournament.
Most of the participating teams, with just a few exceptions, attended the function and were taken through a step by step process of the rules and objectives of the tournament as well as what is expected of participants.
Those sharing the head table were Mr. Muhammad, his fellow Director, Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, official in charge of statistics, Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith, and General Secretary, Colin ‘BL’ Aaron. Journalist, Rawle Toney, moderated the session.
Mr. Muhammad reminded the gathering of the long years of toil that has distinguished the tournament as the best on the local calendar of sports even as he briefed them of the expectations in keeping with FIFA and the Guyana Football Federation’s statutes.
He said that his group has mastered the art of promoting the sport and is keen to continue along this trend. He also said that the immense strides made by the Golden Jaguars are testimony of the fruits of the input of his organization over the years. Mr. Muhammad chronicled the progression of the tournament from a four team village tournament to its transition into the biggest football spectacle locally.
He admitted that the journey was fraught with disappointment even as his executives were required to change their course after listening to the outcries of the fans. “We were criticized along the way but instead of becoming annoyed we listened and evaluated the material while extracting the positives and we found that such strategies worked,” admitted Mr. Muhammad.
The K&S Director said that their input was not only restricted to promotional activities since the group had facilitated opportunities in the international arena for several ball weavers among them Jermaine Scott, Collie Hercules and Randolph Jerome among others.
The K&S Director further said that this year’s tournament promises to be exciting when the action kicks off on Friday March 20 up to the final game scheduled for the National Stadium Providence on Sunday April 5.
Fans will remember the K&S organization had once coerced the proprietor of Beharry’ Auto Limited to put up a motorcar for the Most Valuable player, a prize won by Dwayne Jacobs. The duo said that while such a lucrative prize is still being considered, and while they have managed to secure a sponsor, they might not be able to make this gesture a reality.
Mr. Mohamed said that the donor has intimated that he could only facilitate the initiative if the taxes on the importation of the vehicle could be waived. As such, the organizers have hinted at the reinstatement of this lucrative prize for the tournament next year.
Nonetheless, despite the challenges associated with the acquisition of sponsorship, the organizers have managed to secure corporate support from several businesses including Mohamed’s Enterprise, DDL, HJTV, Church’s Chicken, Sonic Business Services, Club 704 JGS and Ansa McAl among others.
Sixteen teams will vie for the top spot including Alpha United, Pele, Western Tigers, Rhythm Squad, GDF, GFC, Victoria Kings, Mahaica Determinators, New Amsterdam United, Slingerz FC, Den Amstel FC, Grove Hi Tec, Agricola Red Triangle, Winners’ Connection, Hi Stars and Bartica Beacon.
Matches would be played at several venues around Georgetown as well as in the rural areas such as DCC, where the tournament will be officially launched with a march past, Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Uitvlugt and Leonora with the grand finals taking place at the National Stadium, Providence on Sunday April 5.
The winning team will cart off two million dollars with the runners up winning half that amount. The third and fourth place prizes are five hundred thousand and two hundred and fifty thousand dollars respectively. There will also be trophies which will be presented for individual and team performances.
