The Government Information Agency (GINA) has launched a New York newspaper but local officials have refused to confirm that they spent tens of millions of dollars to set up the project.
The 32-page fortnightly edition- The Guyanese –is distributed free in the New York area. It has no advertisements. Its banner said that the newspaper was established with the intention of “Keeping The Diaspora Informed”.
The Editor-in-Chief is Shanta Goberdhan while the Editor is Henry Singh.
Yesterday, GINA’s Head, Neaz Subhan, confirmed that he heads the NY paper which carries not only news of Government but comments criticizing the Opposition. There is no news from any Opposition officials.
Yesterday, Subhan remained silent on the reported cost of $250M to set up the project.
He said that the money is coming from GINA’s budget.
He did not want to discuss details of the printing but did say that the newspaper was started back in October.
About 5,000 copies are being printed every fortnight, he said.
The newspaper is prepared in Guyana, using materials from GINA with a point person collecting and distributing it in New York.
