He appeared serene and at peace with himself as he lay in a polished casket at Sandy’s Funeral Home, Chapel and Durban Streets, while members of the football fraternity, family members and other bereaved persons filed past to pay their respects and bid him goodbye.
It was the final rites of eminent footballer and coach, Mervin ‘Pug’ Wilson, who passed away at the Public Hospital, Georgetown, Saturday February 21 after a period of illness and he was given a fitting send off yesterday afternoon. He was 63 years old.
Reverend Jean Roberts led the mourners in lusty praises before delivering a stirring message while Dante Wilson eulogized the former football stalwart. The tributes were many as Wilson’s former colleagues and friends reminisced on his works while he was among the living.
One of Wilson’s daughters, Delizah, read the scriptures even as a son stood over his father’s casket softly whispering inaudibly. Several football stalwarts also attended the ceremony including former goalkeeper and national coach, Denzil ‘Hunky Brains’ Wilson, who remembered working alongside Wilson when he (Wilson) held the position as national coach during the early nineties.
Another coach, Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Brathwaite, said that he benefited from Wilson’s expertise when he (Brathwaite) was selected on the national squad in 1993. The coaches all conveyed deepest sympathy to the bereaved family and friends and unanimously agreed that the football family has suffered grave loss.
Wilson is survived by his wife and ten children comprising of 7 girls and 3 boys. One of his children told Kaieteur Sport that her dad has been blessed with 21 grandchildren and 1 great grand.
The body of the football stalwart was laid to rest at the LeRepentir cemetery at the conclusion of the ceremony. Kaieteur Sport joins with the football fraternity and other sports lovers in extending deepest condolences to the bereaving family. May his soul rest in peace!
