Even as the Party ignores criticisms from Dr. Cheddi ‘Joey’ Jagan that it has moved away from the principles of his father—former President Dr. Cheddi Jagan—the People’s Progressive Party
(PPP) is set to honour the late Dr. Jagan throughout March.
General Secretary, Clement Rohee, told the media that several activities to celebrate the life and work of the PPP founder have been planned.
Rohee said that both Dr. Cheddi Jagan and his wife, Janet, died in March—Dr. Jagan died on March 6, 1997 and his wife Janet on March 28, 2009.
The celebrations and commemorative activities will be held under the theme “Cheddi Jagan: His Vision, our Living Guide”.
Among the several activities planned are the Babu John wreath laying and commemorative activity on March 8. This will be preceded by a cycle race from New Amsterdam to No. 54 Village Corentyne.
Rohee said that thousands of Party members, supporters and friends are expected to participate in this commemorative activity which will be addressed by President Donald Ramotar, former President Bharrat Jagdeo and himself.
Other activities planned include the Annual Cheddi Jagan Lecture on March 23, at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre, the Cheddi Jagan Fitness walk at the National Park on March 15 and the Annual Family Fun Day at State House. Also on March 15, there will be a book and photographic exhibition at the National Library.

During the press conference he hosted at Freedom House on Tuesday, Rohee told the media, “The PPP takes this opportunity to extend an invitation to all Guyanese to participate in all of the planned activities in honour of this great leader and statesman, whose dedication and commitment to the cause of a better Guyana is unmatched. He was truly a man of the people.”
He added that, “The PPP wishes to also pay homage to Mrs. Janet Jagan, former President of Guyana who also passed away in March, and who served this nation with dedication and distinction. The wreath laying activity at Babu John on March 28 is one of the several activities planned by the PPP in her honour.”
