– As activities wind down
As the end of Black History Month draws near, the African Cultural and Development Association (ACDA) has deemed its planned activities for the month a huge success.
This year’s Black History Month was officially launched by ACDA on February 5 and is set to conclude on February 28. As part of ACDA’s celebration of the month there has been an ongoing exhibition and the organisation’s Thomas Lands headquarters.
According to ACDA Member Clementine Marshall, the exhibition focused on the African legacy along with inventions.
Marshall explained that hundreds of children from about 12 schools have participated so far in the exhibition. These schools, she said, were from around the country and ranged from the primary to secondary levels.
“The responses were very good,” Marshall said, “There were a lot of things they weren’t learning at school.”
Marshall further said the exhibition was very inclusive and saw children from different races engaging in the activities. She emphasised the need for broad education across the different races of Guyana. She said that most of the children were surprised at the information presented and the reach of African culture.
“Everybody was interested and they also shared the information they got. They learnt that we’re all people living in the same space and we should do so harmoniously,” Marshall said. She added that there had been lively discussions and lengthy question and answer segments.
The month’s activities will conclude with a film show on African culture and dance, Marshall said.
Meanwhile, the organisation is still in the planning stage for the International Decade of People of African Descent.
The international decade officially commenced on January 1, 2015 and ACDA already has a number of activities planned for this year. However, Marshall said, the organisation is yet to set dates to activities.
Planned activities will include a youth seminar, lectures and exhibitions. The situation for people of African descent will also be looked at analysed and steps to improve this situation during the international decade will be looked at.
The international decade will conclude on December 31, 2024.
